The School of High Energy Accelerator Science was founded in April 2004 from a division of the School of Mathematical and Physical Science. It is a new research school of The Graduate University for Advanced Studies. Three departments, the Department of Accelerator Science, the Department of Materials Structure Science, and the Department of Particle and Nuclear Physics belong to this school, and they are based around KEK’s accelerator facilities, its Materials Structure Science laboratory, and its elementary particle physics laboratory respectively. Education in our school is besed on the research activities which KEK is pursuing, and all the departments work closely together in order to develop a broad-based graduate education.
Here let us briefly introduce the education and research fields of the departments. The Department of Particle and Nuclear Physics uses international collaboration in high energy physics experiments such as Belle as well as advanced theoretical research, in order to study and understand the origin of the cosmos and the ultimate structure of matter. In the Department of Materials Structure Science, various forms of matter ranging from molecules and crystals to living organisms are studied from the fundamental interest and also from an application point of view. In the Department of Accelerator Science, the equipment and principles of the accelerators which produce the proton, electron, positron, neutrino, X-ray, neutron, muon and various other particle beams used in the above fields are studied and researched. For details of the various departments, please see the respective home pages for each course.
From April 2006, the School of High Energy Accelerator Science moved to a flexible five-year doctor course. In this way, in addition to the usual third year admission of master’s degree holders to the graduate degree program, a five-year doctor course which admits undergraduates was also began. This offers a broader choice of options for those who are interested in pursuing a research career based on the work done at KEK. The three departments will closely cooperate in order to foster researchers for a new era.
KEK is a place where world class research is in progress. Researchers of all backgrounds, from up-and-coming to established, and research leaders from foreign and Japanese universities and research institutes, are relentlessly working literally day and night both in collaboration and in competition. The School of High Energy Accelerator Science opens its doors to those who wish to join this melting pot of exciting research activity and offers the opportunitity of research and study in this leading-edge environment.
